CAPTAIN GEORGE MAFFIOLI

I AM THE FOUNDER AND HEAD GURU FOR CARIBBEAN DOCKING MASTERS & PILOTS INC. MY PASSION FOR ALL THINGS THAT FLOAT, STARTED AT THE TENDER AGE OF SEVEN. WHILE SPENDING SUMMER VACATIONS AT BOQUERÓN BAY IN PUERTO RICO, MY PARENTS WOULD RENT A SMALL VILLA RIGHT NEXT TO A BOAT RENTAL PLACE OWNED BY A NAUTICAL GURU NAMED MANUEL DOSSANTOS. FOR MY SEVENTH BIRTHDAY HE ALLOWED ME TO TAKE ONE OF HIS SUNFISH SAILBOATS OUT ON THE BAY, FOR FREE. AS I MADE MY APPROACH TO THE DOCK, EXECUTING A PERFECT INTO THE WIND MANEUVER, HE EXPRESSED THAT I HAD REAL NATURAL SHIPHANDLING SKILLS. AT THE TIME, I WAS JUST HAPPY TO GET OUT OF THAT CRAMPED BOAT AND STRETCH MY LEGS. YOU SEE, I WAS ALWAYS A CHUBBY GUY, EVEN AT SEVEN!

MY PROFESSIONAL MARITIME EMPLOYMENT STARTED IN 1982 AS A US COAST GUARD SEAMAN ABOARD THE BUOY TENDER USCG SAGEBRUSH, PAINTING AND SCRAPING THE BIRD DOO DOO OFF THE BUOYS IN THE PORT OF SAN JUAN P.R. IN 1988 I LEFT THE COAST GUARD WITH AN AB TICKET AND A 100 TON MASTERS LICENSE TO BECOME A SEAMAN ABOARD TUG BOATS FOR CROWLEY TOWING AT PIER 10 IN SAN JUAN. AT CROWLEY, I WORKED UP THE RANKS FROM SEAMAN TO MATE, THEN TO MASTER, AND FINALLY TO DOCKING MASTER. AS DOCKING MASTER I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFE HANDLING OF OCEAN BARGES RANGING FROM 580’ TO 730’ LENGTH OVER ALL. IN 1997 I WAS NOMINATED AS A STATE AND FEDERAL HARBOR PILOT TO SERVE IN ALL PORTS OF PUERTO RICO. MY FIRST PORT WAS YABUCOA. I WAS HANDLING SOME OF THE LARGEST TANKERS TO CALL TO OUR ISLAND. WHILE DOCKING SOME OF THOSE LARGE SHIPS, I REMEMBER MY LEGS WOULD SHAKE SO BADLY THAT I WOULD HAVE TO SIT DOWN. BACK THEN, WE DIDN’T HAVE A VERY EFFICIENT TRAINING PROGRAM SO WE WERE LITERALLY ON A WING AND A PRAYER.

MY EAGERNESS TO BECOME A HARBOR PILOT WOULD NOT PREPARE ME FOR SUCH A HUMBLING PROFESSION. THANKFULLY, I HAVE BEEN HUMBLED BY THOUSANDS OF MANEUVERS IN THE LAST 20 YEARS. ONE DAY, WHEN I HAD JUST FINISHED A COMPLICATED DOCKING OF A LARGE CAR CARRIER, I WAS TOLD BY THE CAPTAIN, WHO WAS FROM INDIA, THAT I WAS A ‘DOCKING GURU’, HENCE THE COMPANY SLOGAN. I USE THIS SLOGAN FREQUENTLY NOW AND I DON’T MIND IF I AM ASSOCIATED WITH IT. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I LIKE IT. AS A SAN JUAN HARBOR PILOT AND DOCKING MASTER, I WISH TO PUT MY DOCKING GURU ABILITIES TO WORK FOR ALL SECTORS OF THE INDUSTRY CALLING TO THE PORTS OF THE CARIBBEAN. AS I LIKE TO SAY; WE PROVIDE VALET PARKING FOR SHIPS AND BARGES WITH RED CARPET SERVICE.

CAPTAIN ALEJANDRO SANFELIU

ALEX ALSO STARTED HIS PROFESSIONAL MARITIME EMPLOYMENT IN THE US COAST GUARD AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, IT WAS ON A BUOY TENDER. HE HAD ABOUT A SIX YEAR HITCH WITH THE COAST GUARD WHEN HE MADE THE SHIFT TO CROWLEY PIER 10 TUG BOAT MECCA. AS A CAPTAIN, ALEX BECAME AN ADROIT TUG HANDLER. HIS EXPERIENCE ON TUGS TOOK HIM ALL OVER THE CARIBBEAN. ANY TUG MASTER COULD TELL YOU THAT THE MOST CHALLENGING BOAT HANDLING WORK IS SHIP ASSIST WORK. ALEX IS ONE OF THE BEST. CAPTAIN SANFELIU SPENT TIME IN SEATTLE WA, WHERE HE BECAME AN UNLIMITED THIRD MATE. HE ALSO POSSESSES HIS FIRST CLASS PILOT ENDORSEMENT FOR THE PORT OF SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO.

I WORKED WITH ALEX FOR MANY YEARS ABOARD CROWLEY TUGS. WE BECAME GOOD FRIENDS, AND WE ALWAYS SAW EYE TO EYE. HE HAS LOADS OF INITIATIVE AND IS FULL OF ENERGY. NOT ONLY HAS HE ACCOMPLISHED A REPUTABLE MARITIME IMPRINT, HE MANAGED TO GO TO LAW SCHOOL AND PASS THE BAR EXAM TO BECOME A REPUTABLE LAWYER. THE MAN IS FULL OF PASSIONS; HE SAYS THAT DOCKING BARGES IS HIS MOST FULFILLING ONE. I RECRUITED ALEX TO BECOME ONE OF MY GURUS, BECAUSE HE POSSESSES THE NATURAL INSTINCTS AND HAS AN ANALYTICAL MIND. MORE SO THAN ALL OF HIS ATTRIBUTES, I TRUST THE GUY.

CAPTAIN FULGENCIO “CORKY” ANAVITATE

CORKY GREW UP IN GUAYANILLA P.R. IN THE DAYS WHEN THAT PORT WAS A BUSY TANKER PORT. GUAYANILLA IS A DEEP WATER PORT THAT USED TO TEND TO 3 OIL REFINERIES. HE STARTED AS A YOUNG DECK HAND ABOARD SOUTH COAST PUERTO RICO TOWING TUGS AROUND 1972. WHILE WORKING WITH THAT COMPANY HE GOT HIS CAPTAINS LICENSE AND BECAME A HARBOR TUG CAPTAIN. IN 1977 CORKY APPLIED AND WAS ACCEPTED TO WORK FOR CROWLEY. FRESH FROM THE PORT OF GUAYANILLA, CROWLEY PUT HIM TO WORK TOWING DEEP SEA BARGES FROM THE UNITED STATES TO PUERTO RICO. HE FREQUENTLY TOWED THE 580 RORO BARGES AND SOMETIMES WAS TASKED WITH TANDEM TOWS. CORKY QUICKLY BECAME A GURU IN THE INDUSTRY. HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN HIGHLY RESPECTED BY HIS COLLEAGUES. HIS TALENT WAS RECOGNIZED TO THE POINT THAT HE WAS ASSIGNED TO BECOME THE PHILADELPHIA DOCKING MASTER FOR CROWLEY. THIS JOB WAS VERY DEMANDING, ESPECIALLY IN THE WINTER, GOING UP AND DOWN THE DELAWARE RIVER WITH THOSE 730’ TOWS. POOR CORKY, A (JIBARO) FROM GUAYANILLA ENDURING SUCH HARSH CLIMATE IN THE NAME OF DOCKING GURU PERFECTION. AFTER MOVING TO PUERTO RICO IN 1990, HE STARTED WORKING AT PIER 10, THE TUG BOAT MECCA. CORKY WAS MADE MANAGER OF CROWLEY TOWING AND TRANSPORTATION. HE MANAGED PIER 10 WITH GREAT CHARISMA AND WAS WELL REGARDED BY THE ENTIRE DOCK FORCE OF OVER 200 EMPLOYEES.

IN 1991 CORKY WAS GRANTED ACCEPTANCE INTO THE SAN JUAN BAY PILOTS. AS A HARBOR PILOT IN SAN JUAN, HE BECAME A HIGHLY CALIBRATED DOCKING MACHINE. HE WAS ALWAYS KNOWN FOR HIS QUICK AND EFFORTLESS MANEUVERS. I’M VERY HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THAT CORKY HAS BECOME THE NEWEST MEMBER OF CARIBBEAN DOCKING MASTERS & PILOTS INC. HE’S A SUPER DOCKING GURU WHO I RESPECT AND REGARD HIGHLY.
